1 Check that you are registered
Look up your record in the statewide voter list, or use the county's search.
The county's search may show one polling place tied to your precinct. You are not limited to it: during early voting you can use any of the early voting sites below, and on Election Day any Bexar County vote center.
Recently moved or changed your name? The Secretary of State says you can update your registration online at Texas.gov. If you moved from another county, register again in Bexar County.
2 Register by Monday, Oct. 5
Ways to register
- Fill out the application online, then print, sign and mail it. Use the Secretary of State's online application. Texas does not have fully online registration, so the signed paper form must be mailed.
- Ask for a postage-paid form through the same Secretary of State page.
- Register in person at the Bexar County Elections Department, 1103 S. Frio St., Suite 100, San Antonio, TX 78207.
- Renewing your driver license or state ID? You can register at the same time through the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Mailing close to the deadline? Ask the post office counter for a hand-stamped postmark, which is free. Automated postmarks are not always dated the day you mail.
Who can register
- You are a U.S. citizen.
- You live in the county where you register.
- You are at least 17 years and 10 months old when you apply, and 18 by Election Day.
- You are not a convicted felon, or you have completed your sentence, probation and parole.
- A court has not declared you totally mentally incapacitated, or partially incapacitated without the right to vote.

Voting by mail: the steps and deadlines
- Download the Application for a Ballot by Mail or call the county to have one sent to you.
- Write your Texas driver license, personal ID or Election Identification Certificate number on the application. If you have none of these, use the last four digits of your Social Security number. Your voter registration number (VUID) does not count.
- Send it to the Bexar County Early Voting Clerk (1103 S. Frio St., Suite 100, San Antonio, TX 78207) so it arrives by Friday, Oct. 23. See the county's vote-by-mail page for mail, email and fax options.
- When your ballot arrives, mark it and write the same ID number on the carrier envelope.
- Return it so it arrives by 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, or by 5 p.m. on Nov. 4 if it is postmarked by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
Voters 65 and older or with a disability can use one application for all elections in the calendar year. If someone helps you, their name, address and signature must be on the application and carrier envelope. Sources: VoteTexas.gov, Texas SOS dates.
5 Bring an accepted photo ID
Any one of these seven
- Texas driver license
- Texas Election Identification Certificate
- Texas personal identification card
- Texas handgun license
- U.S. military ID card with photo
- U.S. citizenship certificate with photo
- U.S. passport (book or card)
Expired ID: for voters 18 to 69 it can be expired up to four years. For voters 70 and older it can be expired any length of time. The citizenship certificate does not expire. The Election Identification Certificate is free from the Department of Public Safety.
If you do not have one and cannot reasonably get one
Bring one of these and sign a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at the polls:
- Voter registration certificate, or another government document with your name and address
- Current utility bill
- Bank statement
- Government check
- Paycheck
- Certified U.S. birth certificate, or another court-admissible document that confirms your birth
Accepted reasons: Lack of transportation; disability or illness; lack of a birth certificate or other documents needed to get an ID; work schedule; family responsibilities; lost or stolen ID; applied for an ID but have not received it. False statements on the declaration are a crime.
Have an accepted ID but forgot it? You can vote a provisional ballot and show the ID at the county elections office within six days, or go home and come back before polls close.
